At ScriptLance, you need to choose the Programmers account type NOT buyer account. You are not a buyer, so choose to make a programmers account. Don’t worry, it does not mean that you are going to do any programming related work. It’s just a label for people seeking online jobs. At GAF, job seekers are called service providers.

I personally have only worked at the first two freelance sites [GAF and SL], which you can see in the above list. [I have done most of freelance work at GAF].

There is no boss at freelance sites and you will be doing jobs for many different people from all over the world. There are two types of accounts at freelancing sites; one is buyer’s account and the other one is the service provider’s account.
Buyers are the people who want to hire some one on the internet who can get their work done. Buyers outsource jobs at freelance sites. If you want to find more information about how freelancing sites work, then you can read more here.
What are Freelancing sites and how do they operate?
I will now explain how you can get online jobs at freelance sites. For that, I will talk about two specific freelance sites where I personally work.
No matter which freelance site you choose, there are some basics things which are the same.
Anyway, I will talk in detail about GAF and little about SL too. The reason why I have chosen to work at these sites is that, they are free to join and also, these freelance sites are better than the most freelance sites.
As it is free to join these two freelance sites, this means that you do not have to invest anything in order to start earning money online.
In order to earn money at freelance sites, you will never have to pay anything from your pocket, ever.
This freelance site is a kind of hybrid-freelance-site. Meaning that, it’s free to join but at the same time, you can also become a paid member.
You can register at this site for free and then you can start applying for the jobs for free, but you are limited to apply for only 15 projects in a month.
With every new month, this limit is increased by one; that is, after one month of registration, this limit will increase to 16.
Buyers create a project (these projects are actually the jobs that we can do online at freelance sites) and they describe all the job details in that project.
People who want to get jobs at freelance sites are called service providers.
After buyer creates a project, it is then visible to all service providers. Service providers who are interested in that job have to place a Bid on that project.
Every project has a budget limit. For example; a buyer may set a budget limit where the lower and upper budget limits are $500 to $1000. Now it is up to the service providers to choose the amount of money for which they are willing to complete that job.
One service provider may place $600 in the bid amount and some other may place $800 for the same project.
This bidding system is there to create a competition among the service providers. This competition help buyers to get their work done for lower rates.
At GAF, the paid members are called the Gold Members. They can place bids on 160+ projects plus every month this limit increases by 1.
Do you need to pay for the gold membership? No: like I said, you never have to pay anything from your pocket.
All you have to do is that, you first find some work as a normal member. As soon as you earn $12, you then upgrade to gold membership.
The money that you earn at freelance sites is added in your account at that site. So, at GAF, you first invest some time and do some work to earn $12 [and then use this money to upgrade to gold membership].
In this way, you will become a gold member without paying any money from your own pocket.
First Step:
First of all, go to GAF and click on SignUp. Registration is the first thing to do. While filling the registration form, remember to fill out all fields in a very professional way.
You need to do this, because this form will contain some fields that will be shown in your public profile. For example: you will see a field where you will need to enter any work experience that you may have.
Many buyers see service provider’s profile before they give any work to them. So, remember to make a nice looking professional profile.

After you get register at GAF, you will then be able to place bids on projects. You will see many different kinds of jobs categories like data entry, copywriting etc. Do not try to find work via opening any specific category, instead, open GAF’s home page. Here you will see a list of Featured projects. Scroll down and you will see a list of 50 newest projects.

You have to always scroll down to this place and look for the latest projects that are being posted. Winning new projects is very much possible for new service providers, where it’s really hard to get two or three days old project.
Buyers do not trust new service providers so you have to wait for quite some time before you will win your first project.
A new service provider is considered lucky if he/she wins a project within the first week of his freelance career.
I was not lucky at all, and I waited for too many days before I finally won a translation project. I really was desperate to win my first project. And because of the bid limit at GAF, I only could place bids on about 15 projects in one month period.
The reason for me to not win a project sooner was that I never sent any private message to the buyers. This is the biggest mistake that any service provider can make. Without sending a PM, don’t expect to win many or any projects. The chances of wining a project without sending PM are like, 0.0001%.
So remember this simple yet very important rule in freelance game; After placing bid on a project, always send a professional looking message to the buyer via freelance messaging system.
Without proper communication with the buyer, you can never be successful in freelance business.
How to send a Private Message to the buyer?
At GAF, open the project description page, and look for a small icon labeled as PM under the buyer’s name. After you place a bid on a project, you then have click on this icon to send a PM.

At SL, you need to use the message board in order to send any messages to the buyer. At SL, you can send message to the buyer even before you place a bid on the project. EuFreelance is almost the same as GAF.
What you write in PM is very important. Content in PM will depend on the nature of the project.
For example; if you have placed a bid on a copywriting project, then you have to send a sample of your writing in PM. If you do not have any sample, then ask the buyer to give you a topic and you will write a 150 words sample for him for free.
Try to get the buyer’s attention and find out what buyer is looking for. If he is looking for low bids, then tell him that you will do the work for the lowest price that he wants to pay.
The most important thing to remember is that you never give up. It is very much possible that you will win your first project after many weeks.
Work hard and never give up.
The other sites, Scriptlance and EuFreelance are almost the same as Getafreelancer. One difference in Scriptlance is that there is no Private Message Icon to use for sending messages to buyer.
Instead, use the Message board for this purpose.
